Eric Chang, Billy Smith from Kona Brewing Company and Amanda Noguchi from Under My Umbrella who are talking about the various efforts that Kona Brewing Company is taking to take care of the community and help some of the smaller groups that are doing great things in Hawaii continue to shine.  They continue to utilize their product and resources to assist smaller non-profit groups as they try to grow and become more self-sufficient.

Ku’ulei Williams, executive director of Aloha Harvest, stops by to tell us what Aloha Harvest does.  She explains how Aloha Harvest takes advantage of the Good Samaritan law to allow groups to donate unused food from stores, hotels and other large producers of meals to those in need.  We go over the way the Good Samaritan Law works, discuss how Aloha Harvest collects and distributes the food, and explain how people can get their companies to participate.

It’s almost summertime and Hawaii Matters is speaking with Dr. Johnnie A. Yates from Kaiser Permanente! Today we’re talking about travel medicine. He’ll give you some helpful tips on how to avoid norovirus and other serious diseases you may encounter when traveling abroad. We’ll also talk to him about precautions you should take when traveling. From vaccines specific to certain countries to avoiding foods so you don’t catch “Montezuma’s Revenge,” there are ways to protect yourself. This is one of Kaiser Permanente’s monthly visits to Hawaii Matters to discuss various health subjects we believe are useful to you.

In this week’s Hawaii Matters, Robert Morita from the Board of Water Supply stops by to talk about disaster preparedness.  We will discuss both what the BWS is doing to stay prepared for various types and levels of natural disasters that may affect the water supply, and also give you tips about what you can do to be better equipped to have a fresh water supply for you and your family in the case of a water shortage/outage.

With summer in full swing, Dr. Allyson Spence-Shishido, pediatric dermatologist for Kaiser Permanente, comes by Hawaii Matters to talk with Devon about how best to keep your keiki safe in the sun.  We talk about the differences in sunscreens, how UV clothing works, and what exactly those SPF ratings you see on your sunscreen means.

Sheri Mikami and Arthur Aiu, Community Relations specialists for the Board of Water Supply, sits down with Hawaii Matters to talk about some of the history of the Board of Water Supply, the wonderful educational tours that you can take part in, and the special things that BWS has planned for the 30th annual Unthirsty Plant Sale at the Halawa Xeriscape Gardens in Halawa.

This morning, Jan Harada, President and CEO of Helping Hands Hawaii, comes by to talk with Devon about all of the services that HHH provides for people.  From language access, which includes translation services, to behavior health services, and housing stabilization work, Helping Hands Hawaii is helping to make sure they help bridge the gap for people who are struggling.

Percy Ihara, Editor/Publisher, stops by Hawaii Matters to talk to Devon about “Generations magazine”, the free magazine that helps seniors stay healthy and find resources that can help them live active, full lives.  He shares the inspiration behind how he became involved with Generations, and what he hopes to accomplish by providing this free publication for seniors.

This week on Hawaii Matters, our guest is John Cummings III, a public information officer with the Honolulu Department of Emergency Management.  He helps us understand how the City of Honolulu and the State and Federal emergency management organizations work together and where their responsibilities lie, and also gives us an idea of what we can be expecting in the coming months as we move into hurricane season.

Joining Devon in the Hawaii Matters studio is Dr. Ben Chun, a physician with Kaiser Permanente who specializes in Sports Medicine.  We talk about children’s sports and how specialization has lead to some repetitive sports injuries.  We also talk about the current state of youth sports and how sports medicine is helping kids stay healthy and injury free.

Hawaii Matters welcomes Lisa Maruyama, President and CEO of the Hawaii Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations, otherwise known as HANO.  She discusses what her organization does to assist non-profits to stay viable and healthy, and what they are doing to help the work of non-profits overall.  We also discuss the changing landscape that non-profits are facing, and what can be done to help them achieve their goals.

9/9/18 – Dr. Peggy Latare from Kaiser Permanente Hawaii

Dr. Peggy Latare from Kaiser Permanente Hawaii discusses the importance of maintaining a healthy weight. She talks about the health measuring tool, the Body Mass Index (BMI). We delve into the difference between “overweight” and “obese.” She also addresses obesity in kids both here in Hawaii and nationwide. How Hawaii compares in general to the rest of the nation as far as weight and health are concerned. We talk about some of the various diets, which ones work, and what’s best for one person may not be the best for another. Bariatric surgery has been an option over the last decade or so. Dr. Latare addresses some of the basic info from this area of weight management.

This week on Hawaii Matters, Devon speaks to Markus Owens of the City’s Environmental services division, Tonya Ketza from the City’s Facility Maintenance division, and Kathleen Pahinui from the Board of Water Supply about “Imagine A Day Without Water”, a collaboration between all these divisions, to show people exactly what a day without water would mean to us.  They will also be talking about the various events that will be occurring on October 10 that will help you “Imagine A Day Without Water.”

This week on Hawaii Matters, Devon is happy to bring into the studio Corie Tanida, Executive Director of Common Cause Hawaii.  They are a non-profit group that is determined to speak truth to power, and make sure that government remains transparent and open to all.  Hear about their latest issues, and what they’re doing to make politics a better, more open place.

11/11/18 – Sandy Fong, Market City Shopping Center Joan Naguwa, HUGS Aries Jackson, Common Grace Kenneth Agcaoili and Layton Lau from Kaimuki High School

Market City Shopping Center stops by Hawaii Matters and brings three non-profits that they’ve been working with, Joan Naguwa from HUGS, an organization that is helping children and families coping with children with life-threatening illnesses.  Also joining Devon in the studio is Aries Jackson, Co-Executive Director for Common Grace, an organization that helps provide mentors for elementary school students who may be at risk, as well as Kenneth Agcaoili and Layton Lau from Kaimuki High School, who will discuss their schools’ hospitality academy, a program that gives students real-life experience with working in the hospitality and food service industries.

11/18/18 – David Miyashiro, the founding executive director of Hawaii Kids Can

This week, Devon welcomes in David Miyashiro, the founding executive director of Hawaii Kids Can, a non-profit group dedicated to helping students discover how they can use their power and interest as students to drive public policy and make a difference in the state.

On this week’s Hawaii Matters, Devon welcomes Dr. Shanon Makekau from Kaiser Permanente to speak about sleep disorders, and specifically sleep apnea.  We talk about causes, treatments, and how to get your best sleep.

In this week’s show, Devon welcomes Dr. Mabel Wong, Chief of OB/GYN of Kaiser Permanente Hawaii to speak about Women’s Health.  She will discuss some of the specific health issues facing women today.  Including reproduction, cancer and preventive measures every woman can take to keep herself healthy.

12/09/18 – Marni Reynolds and Carly Gaffey from the Na Kupuna Makamae

On this week’s Hawaii Matters, Devon welcomes Marni Reynolds and Carly Gaffey from the Na Kupuna Makamae center to talk about one of the programs that they have been offering that is getting more and more popular, sound baths. It’s a whole new way to experience sound and it’s healing properties. They also discuss the healing properties of “gentle” yoga, and how Na Kupuna Makamae is helping the elderly and the succeeding generations work and play together to keep all ages healthy and happy.

 

12/16/18 – Katie Chang, Center for Tomorrow’s Leaders

Katie Chang, Exec. Director for CTL, Center for Tomorrow’s Leaders. CTL helps to engage, equip, empower, and develop Hawaii’s young to be the visionary leaders of tomorrow. The organization identifies future leaders in Hawaii high schools on all islands. The program addresses questions students and parents have about how to further develop skills of students and how those skills might apply to their future work after high school. What are the core values of CTL and how are those values communicated and developed in CTL students. CTL helps participants with a mentorship program. CTL is always looking for more mentors to help guide CTL students. Chang also addresses “Hawaii 2.0” what that means, how will Hawaii look in the future, and where will the support come from
